Why am I little?

Yes, today's question was "Why am I little?" To which I responded, "Because you haven't been alive all that long. You are still young."

Makela's response? "I'm not young." We went back and forth for a bit, with her giggling when she insisted that she is NOT young. Of course, this was all done at the bank while I was waiting at the teller window. The tellers and other customers were amused.

Finally, I explained that she still had to grow and get older before she could become a grownup. "Like Mommy," Makela said. "Yes, like Mommy."

Then she followed that up with, "Why Mommy a grownup?"

"Because I've been alive for a REALLY long time, Makela."

Question of the Day

Today's question: "Why is it winter?"

New Friends at the Wild Animal Park

The three of us went to the Wild Animal Park today, and of course there were lots of questions about the animals. Most of them had to do with their names, as Makela wants to know "What him name?" or "What her name?" with almost everyone and everything we meet.

So today we asked the zookeeper for the names of the animals in the Petting Kraal, reintroducing ourselves to Bonnie the Barasingha (aka "Indian Swamp Deer"); Socks (can't say I remember what kind of ungulate he is); Winky the one-eyed Persian goitered gazelle (yes, I looked him up on the WAP web site to make sure I got it right -- you can too at http://www.sandiegozoo.org/kids/animal_gazelle_winky.html); and Pearl, an Eld's deer and the oldest resident of the Petting Kraal at 18 years (yes, I'm a dork and remembered this story).

We also rode the carousel three times and the new Safari Tour Ride (it's replaced the old tram ride around the WAP perimeter). That was about it for us, although we stopped at a DIFFERENT In-n-Out location for lunch on the way home. Of course Makela asked why we never go to that In-n-Out.

Which brings me to the Question of the Day. "Why are they called potstickers?" Or, as Makela calls these Asian favorites of hers, "HOTstickers."

Princess Underpants

Today was full of promise and progress, as Makela decided that it would be a good day to try wearing BIG GIRL UNDERPANTS *ALL* day long! Woohoo! We had two accidents, one early in the day and one late, but that was mostly because Mommy trusted Makela when she told me she did NOT have to go. Although the early accident also happened within 45 minutes of her last going (and after that, I decided it would be good to go every 30-45 minutes instead of an hour!). But by bedtime, I'd lost count of how many times Makela used the potty today, which I say is a good thing!

I also learned a lot today. Or rather, RElearned. I have to retrain myself to bring along extra EVERYthing again, just like when Makela was a baby, in case she spit up or had a diaper explosion. Today's morning accident occurred at the mall, and although I'd managed to remember extra undies, I forgot extra pants and socks -- both of the ones Makela was wearing were casualties. So I'm back to hauling around lots of extra clothing, but at least we're headed towards leaving the diapers behind! Again I say "WOOHOO!"

Speaking of clothes, Makela has become quite the fashionista. Or at least she thinks she's one. She's not afraid to show her personal style, that's for sure! After her quiet time this afternoon, Makela picked out a new outfit: red shirt with white polka dots and a bumblebee embroidered on the front, aqua blue leggings, lavender socks, purple Mary Janes with flowers, AND her red and black SPARKLY tutu from her ladybug costume of Halloween 2006!!! Oh, and we sported this while grocery shopping -- she was quite the hit in Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, while pushing her toy shopping cart through the aisles!

And last but not least, there was of course a barrage of questions today. The big, burning one of the day was blurted out as we were walking home from the mall: "Why does the wind blow?" Needless to say, it was a breezy day, and inquiring minds want to know.

Welcome to my first blog post! Today was a fun day -- Makela and I went down to the Holiday Bowl Big Balloon Parade on Harbor Drive. She loved it, especially the marching bands. She danced to them, and even pretended to drum and play the trombone

On our way home from errands at the end of the day, Makela asked me another great question: "Why is the sky blue?"
